Girl in the Zoetrope
With more than a nod to Powell and Pressburger’s ‘The Red Shoes’, 8 minute short, ‘Girl In the Zoetrope’ (2014), is a magical realism film that combines zoetrope animation and live action to explore the impact of urban alienation upon an unusual young woman. Directed by BAFTA award winning brothers Noah and Oscar Dunbar, the film is a metaphor for having the courage to face your fears and was commissioned by The National Theatre.

An inspection of male grooming
Hours training in the boxing ring or sitting in the chair having your hair cut? I briefly studied the process men go through to reach a certain satisfaction and also the relationship between ‘the groomer’ and ‘the groomed’. © Oscar Dunbar and https://oscardunbar.wordpress.com/, 2014. Our Carnival Tune
The August bubble looms
A party moon
Flies over a London west
Showing goons in string vests
And Ska heads at their very best
Roots run deep
The monster sleeps
Until reggae beat
Blossoms the carnival open.
We the fruit-catchers
A shimmy of the hip
A nip of the bottom lip
Mouthful of jerk
The chicken chew
And a twisting twerk
The dub rumbles through.
So raise your Red Stripe high
Right hand grips it tight
Our torchlight, black green gold
Flag-bearing never ending groove
As we float down Grove
All youthful hearts
As dancing cops do a dad-move.
